In France, 22 films will compete for the Palme d’Or at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, where American actress and writer Greta Gerwig will chair the jury.
Meryl Streep, one of the leading actresses of American cinema, will be the guest of honor at the opening ceremony of the 77th Cannes Film Festival at the Grand Theatre Lumiere in Cannes. The opening film of the festival is Quentin Dupieux’s French comedy “The Second Act” (Le deuxieme Acte).
Jury President and Members
Actress Gerwig, who is the jury president of the festival this year, will evaluate the films in the festival with 9 jury members. Among the jury members is screenwriter and photographer Ebru Ceylan, wife of the famous director Nuri Bilge Ceylan. Other jury members include American actress Lily Gladstone, French actress Eva Green, Lebanese screenwriter and director Nadine Labaki, Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona, Italian actor Pierfrancesco Favino, Japanese director Kore-eda Hirokazu and French actor and producer Omar Sy.
Films Competing for the Palme d’Or
Following last year’s Palme d’Or awarded to “Anatomy of a Fall” by jury president Ruben Östlund, 22 films will compete for this prestigious award this year. Many important productions will meet moviegoers throughout the festival.
Social Problems and Call for Strikes
It is reported that there may be disruptions during the festival as cinema and festival workers have called for a strike. The call for strike action by the “Poverty Behind the Screens” collective comes amid concerns over inadequate wages and unemployment insurance. The Cannes Film Festival management stated that they are aware of these problems and are open to finding solutions.
Festival Duration and Closing
Running until May 25th, the festival will end with an award ceremony. At this ceremony, the best films selected from the films screened during the festival will receive their awards.
