WASHINGTON — The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution Tuesday declaring Golan Heights under Israeli control as “occupied” and the 1981 annexation attempt “illegal.” The resolution demands that Israel withdraw to the June 4, 1967 border.
Drafted by Egypt, the measure passed with 123 votes in favor, 7 opposed, and 41 abstentions — reflecting strong but not universal international backing.
The resolution states that Israel’s decision on December 14, 1981, to extend its laws and administration over the Golan is “null and void.” It calls for the restoration of the pre-1967 boundary, affirming that the ongoing occupation and de facto annexation represent a major obstacle to achieving a just and lasting peace in the region.
