Haruna Iddrisu, Ghana’s Minister of Education, and Mohammed Adams Sukparu, Deputy Minister for Communication and Digital Technology, have been airlifted for medical treatment after sustaining injuries in a road accident in northern Ghana.
The crash occurred around 11:00 a.m. on Thursday between Banu and Kunchokor along the Tumu–Navrongo Highway, which links parts of the Upper West Region and Upper East Region.
The injured officials were initially treated locally before arrangements were made to transport them to Accra on a separate flight for further care.
Medical officer Joshua Amikiya Ayariga, who attended to the victims, told Ghana News Agency that the ministers and other injured persons were in stable condition.
Reports indicate that the Education Minister’s driver, Alhassan Zakaria, suffered a fractured hand, while others in the convoy sustained varying degrees of injuries but were responding to treatment.
According to sources, the accident occurred when another motorist crossed the convoy’s path, forcing the driver to lose control amid heavy dust on the road, resulting in the crash.
The ministers and their delegation were travelling to Tumu to attend the 40th anniversary celebration of Tumu College of Education.
Bening Adamu Yakubu, Municipal Chief Executive for Sissala East, said he received a distress call shortly after 11:00 a.m. informing him of the accident involving government officials along the highway.
