To mark The Gambia’s 61st Independence Day on February 18, the Turkish Embassy in Banjul hosted a lively cultural evening themed “Two Continents, One Runway.” The event brought together fashion, heritage, and diplomacy in a celebration of shared cultural ties.
Guests included First Lady Fatoumatta Bah-Barrow and other high-profile representatives. A major highlight was the showcase of 21 traditional Turkish wedding dresses from seven regions of Türkiye, presented by the Izmir Maturation Institute.

These designs were displayed alongside elegant Gambian bridal wear, with special collaborative outfits created by Turkish designers using Gambian fabrics and Gambian designers working with Turkish textiles.
Bah-Barrow noted that the show went beyond fashion, encouraging cultural dialogue and showing how diplomacy can grow through art. Türkiye’s ambassador Fahri Türker Oba also emphasised the importance of partnership and creativity between the two nations.

The evening reflected the pride and joy of Gambian Independence celebrations, honouring the country’s sovereignty since 1965.
