Rescue teams in Minas Gerais have spent a third consecutive day searching through mud and debris after landslides killed at least 54 people and displaced thousands. Heavy rain continues to threaten the region, raising fears of additional disasters.
In Juiz de Fora, excavator operator Everaldo de Almeida said crews must work carefully in Parque Jardim Burnier, where homes collapsed and victims remain buried. He explained that moving too quickly could damage bodies still trapped under the debris.
Over 5,000 residents have left their homes, with many returning briefly to recover belongings and pets. Rescue operations are ongoing, with neighbors also helping search for missing people.
Authorities warn that more rainfall is expected through the weekend, complicating recovery efforts in an area repeatedly affected by extreme weather events linked by scientists to climate change.
