Former Nigerian Attorney General and Justice Minister Abubakar Malami has been hit with new terrorism-related charges, adding to ongoing money laundering accusations. Malami, who served from 2015 to 2023, was previously accused of laundering about $6 million alongside his wife and son.

On Tuesday, the federal high court in Abuja charged Malami with knowingly abetting terrorism financing by refusing to prosecute suspects allegedly backing insurgents. Both he and his son were also charged with engaging in acts of terrorism by possessing an unlicensed pistol and ammunition at his home. They have pleaded not guilty.

Malami had been granted bail last month in the money laundering case but was rearrested shortly afterward. He is the latest senior official from former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to face trial for fraud.

Nigeria has been grappling with a violent insurgency for more than 15 years, which has killed over 40,000 people and displaced nearly two million.
