The United States says it is helping around 230 American citizens leave Israel after the outbreak of war involving Israel, the US, and Iran. So far, more than 130 Americans have already left, and about 100 more were expected to depart Tuesday, according to the United States Department of State.
Washington has also urged Americans across the Middle East from Egypt eastward to leave through commercial routes where possible, even though many airports in the region are closed or operating with heavy restrictions.
Fighting intensified after joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran that began on February 28. The attacks reportedly killed more than 40 senior Iranian officials, including Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.
The strikes have also resulted in the deaths of more than 700 civilians. Iran has responded with retaliation, further escalating tensions in the region. The US accuses Iran’s leadership of oppressing its citizens and pursuing nuclear weapons claims that Tehran denies.
