Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has raised Ankara’s concerns with his Iranian counterpart following the interception of a ballistic munition launched from Iran toward Turkish airspace.
During a phone call on Wednesday, Fidan told Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi that actions capable of escalating the ongoing regional conflict must be avoided, according to Turkish diplomatic sources.
The incident occurred after a projectile fired from Iran was detected passing through Iraqi and Syrian airspace before being intercepted by NATO air and missile defence systems in the Eastern Mediterranean, Türkiye’s National Defence Ministry said.
In response, NATO condemned the targeting of a member state and reaffirmed its commitment to collective defence.
“We condemn Iran’s targeting of Türkiye. NATO stands firmly with all Allies, including Türkiye,” a spokesperson said, adding that the alliance’s deterrence and defence posture remains robust across all domains, including air and missile defence.
The episode underscores the growing regional tensions as military confrontations involving Iran and its adversaries continue to ripple across the Middle East.
