Kenyan police have rescued 70 foreign nationals, including 66 Ethiopians and 4 Eritreans, who were being held in a house in the Ruai area by a suspected human trafficking network, authorities reported on X. One Kenyan suspect has been arrested in connection with the case.
Kenya serves as a key transit point for migrants from the Horn of Africa, many of whom leave their home countries seeking jobs in South Africa, the Gulf states, or Europe. Traffickers often promise safe passage and well-paying jobs but exploit migrants instead, using networks that include local facilitators.
The case comes amid heightened efforts by Kenyan authorities to crack down on human trafficking. In February, security agents arrested Festus Omwamba, accused of recruiting Kenyans for supposed skilled work in Russia, only for them to be sent to the front lines in the war in Ukraine.
The Kenyan government previously reported that over 1,000 Kenyans were recruited to fight for Russia in Ukraine, with at least 89 still on the front lines, 39 hospitalized, 28 missing in action, and others having returned home, including at least one confirmed death.
