On International Women’s Day, the African Union urged countries that have not yet ratified the continent’s Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls to take immediate action. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, AU Commission Chairperson, said Africa has one of the world’s most progressive frameworks for protecting women and girls, and that the convention is a key step toward ending violence and promoting safety.

Youssouf stressed that violence against women is not only a moral issue but also impacts peace, security, public health, and economic development. He praised the contributions of women across the continent, noting that their leadership is essential to building “a peaceful, prosperous and inclusive” Africa.

The statement also highlighted practical areas for gender equality, such as water and sanitation. Women often bear the greatest burden in water collection and face health risks, but when women participate in managing water and natural resources, the outcomes are fairer and more sustainable.
