The armed forces of Democratic Republic of the Congo said they shot down two drones belonging to the Rwanda Defence Force after the aircraft allegedly entered Congolese airspace in the eastern part of the country.
According to the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC), the drones were intercepted in Mikenge after they crossed into the Minembwe area of South Kivu Province. The army described the incident as a violation of Congolese sovereignty and a breach of the Washington Accord.
Officials said the military remains on alert and prepared to defend the country’s territorial integrity. Rwanda had not immediately responded to the allegations.
Tensions between the two neighbours have remained high as the M23 rebel group continues to expand its presence in eastern DR Congo. The rebels currently control several areas, including the provincial capitals of Goma and Bukavu, which they seized earlier in 2025.
The Congolese government and the United Nations have repeatedly accused Rwanda of supporting the M23 rebels, a claim Kigali denies. Meanwhile, the United States imposed sanctions on Rwanda’s military and four senior officers on March 2 over alleged backing of the group, a move Rwanda criticized as one-sided.
