At least 30 people have lost their lives after severe flooding struck the Gamo region in southern Ethiopia, following days of intense rainfall that overwhelmed local communities.
Authorities said the deaths were reported mainly in the Degama areas, where heavy downpours caused rivers to overflow and inundate nearby settlements, destroying homes and infrastructure.
The disaster comes as East Africa experiences a wave of extreme weather, with neighbouring Kenya also reporting dozens of fatalities after torrential rains recently hit Nairobi and other regions.
Experts warn that such extreme rainfall events are becoming more frequent across the region, with studies highlighting a growing pattern of both intense floods and prolonged droughts over the past two decades.
Scientists attribute the trend partly to human-driven climate change, which is increasing the severity and unpredictability of extreme weather events across East Africa.
