Open Iftar Brings Communities Together at Islamic University in Uganda

Approximately 1,000 people gathered at the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) for an open iftar, the meal that Muslims eat to break their fast at sunset during the Holy month of Ramadan.

Nearly 1,000 people gathered at the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) for a large open iftar event during the holy month of Ramadan.

The iftar  the evening meal Muslims use to break their fast at sunset was organized by the Turkish development agency Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) together with the university. Students from different religious backgrounds and members of the local community attended the event.

Participants said the gathering created a strong sense of unity and cultural exchange. One student, Tracy Mutoni, said it was her first time attending an open iftar and described the experience as meaningful and important for promoting understanding between people of different faiths.

Fatih Ak, the Turkish ambassador to Uganda, praised the university for welcoming students from all religious backgrounds and said Türkiye supports initiatives that encourage social harmony.

The university’s rector, Ismail Gyagenda, also welcomed members of the public to the event, emphasizing that the institution’s doors are open to everyone.

Meanwhile, TİKA’s Uganda coordinator Murat Cetin said the agency plans to support additional development projects in the country, including providing advanced laboratory equipment to the Habib Medical School at the university.
