Gunmen killed at least 20 people in a violent attack in Plateau State in central Nigeria, according to the Kanam Development Association (KADA).

The assault occurred on Friday when suspected bandits ambushed soldiers on a routine patrol in the area. During the ensuing gun battle, 12 security personnel were killed along with eight local residents who had joined efforts to defend their community.

After the clash, the attackers reportedly moved into a nearby village, looting property and stealing cattle, further worsening the hardship faced by already vulnerable rural communities.

Local leaders say villages in the region have suffered repeated attacks and kidnappings in recent years, carried out by criminal gangs commonly referred to as “bandits.” These groups often target communities for ransom payments, livestock theft, and other forms of looting.

Despite increased security operations by the Nigerian government to combat armed groups and terrorist organisations, insecurity continues to affect many parts of northern and central Nigeria.
