A series of explosions carried out by suspected suicide bombers has killed at least 23 people and injured over 100 others in Maiduguri, northeastern Nigeria.
The blasts struck three locations on Monday evening: the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and two busy markets Post Office Market and Monday Market—causing panic and heavy casualties.
Police spokesperson Nahum Kenneth Daso confirmed that early investigations point to suicide bombers as the attackers. Victims are currently receiving treatment across several hospitals, including UMTH and other local medical facilities.
The attacks come just hours after a separate assault on a military post, and follow a recent pattern of renewed violence in the region. Authorities believe groups such as Boko Haram and affiliates linked to Islamic State are behind the rising attacks.
Maiduguri had experienced a period of relative calm in recent years, but these incidents along with a previous mosque bombing—signal a worrying return of violence in the area.
Police say security has been reinforced, with increased patrols and surveillance across the city, and that normalcy is gradually being restored.
