Bola Tinubu has arrived in London for a historic state visit, the first by a Nigerian leader to the United Kingdom in nearly four decades. He is accompanied by Oluremi Tinubu and senior government officials.

The visit, hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Windsor Castle, highlights the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and Britain, its former colonial ruler.

Key discussions during the visit include:

  • Trade and investment: Annual trade between the two countries reached £8.1 billion ($11 billion) in 2025, showing steady growth.
  • Major infrastructure deal: Tinubu will witness the signing of a £746 million agreement to refurbish two major ports in Lagos.
  • Defence and cooperation: Talks with Keir Starmer are expected to strengthen military and economic ties.
  • Cultural and diaspora relations: Engagement with the large Nigerian community in the UK.

However, the visit also comes amid sensitive historical issues, including calls for reparations over slavery and colonial-era abuses. A Nigerian court recently ordered the UK to pay compensation related to a 1949 incident involving miners killed under colonial rule, though it is unclear if this will be discussed during the trip.

This visit marks a major diplomatic moment, as the last such state visit was in 1989 under General Ibrahim Babangida, and reflects efforts by both nations to strengthen modern partnerships while navigating historical legacies.
