Chad has announced it will send 750 security personnel to Haiti as part of a mission supported by the United Nations to combat powerful criminal gangs.

The deployment will include police and gendarmerie forces, with the first group expected to leave by the end of March and more arriving through June. Chad is joining an international effort to strengthen security and support Haitian police in dealing with widespread gang violence.

Haiti has been struggling with gang control for years, with armed groups dominating parts of the country and causing instability. Earlier efforts, including a mission largely made up of Kenyan police, had limited success. Now, a stronger force of up to 5,500 personnel is being formed to improve the situation.

According to the United Nations, more than 5,500 people have died due to gang violence and related security operations between March last year and mid-January, showing how serious the crisis has become.

In simple terms, Chad is stepping in to help Haiti fight gangs and restore order, as part of a larger international mission trying to bring stability to the country.
