Senegal has officially filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in a bid to overturn the decision that stripped them of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title and awarded it to Morocco.
The Swiss-based tribunal confirmed receipt of the appeal lodged by the Senegalese Football Federation against both the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Royal Moroccan Football Federation.
The dispute stems from the AFCON final held on January 18, where Senegal initially secured a 1–0 victory in extra time. However, CAF later ruled that Senegal had breached tournament regulations after players briefly walked off the pitch in protest over a penalty decision in favour of Morocco.
Following Morocco’s appeal, CAF declared Senegal to have forfeited the match, revising the result to a 3–0 win for the hosts.
In its submission, Senegal is seeking to have the CAF decision annulled and to be reinstated as champions of the tournament.
CAS has indicated that it will handle the case with urgency, acknowledging the high level of public interest. Director General Matthieu Reeb stated that proceedings would be conducted as swiftly as possible while ensuring a fair hearing for all parties.
The outcome of the appeal could have significant implications for African football, as it will determine the final and legally binding resolution of one of the most controversial decisions in the competition’s history.
