Prosecutors in South Africa have announced plans to charge the country’s police chief, Fannie Masemola, in a major corruption case linked to a $20 million health services contract.
The case involves a 2024 police tender awarded to businessman Vusimuzi Matlala, also known as “Cat,” who is suspected of ties to organized crime. The contract was later cancelled, but not before millions had already been paid.
Masemola has been summoned to appear in court, while authorities have already charged 15 other suspects—including several police officers and a company director—in connection with the deal.
President Cyril Ramaphosa said he would handle the matter according to the law, while stressing the importance of keeping the police force stable during the process.
The scandal has drawn widespread attention across the country. Investigations and public hearings—broadcast on TV and radio—have revealed deeper concerns about corruption within the police, including alleged links between senior officers and criminal networks.
The case also connects to broader controversies involving Matlala, whose name has appeared in multiple scandals, including the Tembisa Hospital corruption case. That case involved billions in missing funds and led to the 2021 killing of whistleblower Babita Deokaran.
In simple terms, this scandal is not just about one contract—it has raised serious questions about corruption at the highest levels of law enforcement in South Africa.
