Heavy traffic hit Nigeria’s two main airports on Sunday — Murtala Muhammed International Airport and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport — after a new cashless payment rule officially began.
Under the “Go-Cashless” policy, supported by the Central Bank of Nigeria, drivers can no longer pay cash at airport gates. Instead, they must use a special access card. The goal is to promote digital financial transactions across the country.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) says the system will speed up vehicle processing, improve transparency, and make airport operations more efficient.
However, many motorists waited until the launch day to register for their cards directly at the airport gates instead of registering earlier at banks or FAAN offices. This led to long queues and major traffic congestion around both airports in Lagos and Abuja.
FAAN admitted that traffic built up at the access points, despite prior announcements about the new system. To fix the problem, the authority said it has added more staff, opened extra registration points, and improved on-the-ground coordination to ease the congestion.
