Authorities in Azerbaijan say drones launched from Iran struck the Nakhchivan International Airport in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, damaging infrastructure and injuring two civilians.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, the attack took place around midday when unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) entered Azerbaijani territory from Iran. One drone reportedly struck the airport while another crashed near a school building in the village of Şəkərabad.

Officials said the airport building was damaged and two civilians were injured, while other drones fell in nearby areas. Videos circulating on social media reportedly captured the sound of explosions at the airport.

Azerbaijan condemns the attack

The Azerbaijani government strongly condemned the incident, saying the drone strikes violated international law and increased tensions in the region. Officials demanded that Iran explain the incident and take steps to prevent similar events in the future.

Azerbaijan also warned that it reserves the right to respond to the attack if necessary.

Following the incident, Iran’s ambassador to Baku, Mojtaba Dermiçilu, was summoned by the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry to receive a formal protest note.

The Ministry of Defence of Azerbaijan said technical investigations of the UAVs are underway and stressed that responsibility for the attack rests entirely with Iran.

Regional concern grows

The situation has drawn attention from neighboring countries. Jeyhun Bayramov discussed the incident with Bakhtiyor Saidov, who called to receive details about the attack.

Bayramov said the drone strikes violated international norms and increased tensions in the region, adding that Azerbaijan expects clarification from Iran and measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The attack comes amid wider instability in the region, with ongoing military confrontations involving Iran and other countries in the Middle East.
