A tragic road accident in Egypt has claimed the lives of 18 fishermen after a truck and a pickup vehicle collided on Thursday afternoon.
The crash happened on the 30 June Axis highway, south of Port Said, according to the Ministry of Labour. The fishermen were being transported in the pickup truck to work at fish farms when the collision occurred around 12:30 p.m. Officials have not yet explained how the vehicles crashed.
Authorities believe the victims were from the town of Matareya in Dakahlia province.
Photos shared by local officials show the pickup truck severely crushed between two large cargo trucks, with wreckage scattered across the road.
Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouly expressed condolences to the families and ordered financial assistance to be provided. The Port Said governor also visited the crash site and local hospitals to check on the injured and oversee emergency response efforts.
Deadly road accidents remain a serious problem in Egypt, often linked to speeding, poor road conditions, and weak enforcement of traffic laws.
