President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said Europe cannot build a credible new security framework without Türkiye, arguing that Ankara must be more fully included in the continent’s defence structures.

Speaking to reporters after returning from Ethiopia, Erdogan stressed that Türkiye has one of NATO’s most capable militaries and warned that any European security architecture that excludes Türkiye would be incomplete. He added that Türkiye is not just a partner “at the table,” but a country with real field experience and strength.

Stronger Role in Africa

Erdogan also highlighted his Ethiopia visit, calling the country a gateway to deeper engagement with Africa. He pointed to Türkiye’s mediation efforts between Ethiopia and Somalia and said Ankara’s approach is based on partnership and respect, not exploitation.

Syria, Iran, and Diplomacy

On Syria, Erdogan said Türkiye’s push for a “terror-free” region is moving forward carefully. He also addressed tensions involving Iran and the United States, saying Türkiye is in contact with both sides and strongly opposes military escalation.

“A new war targeting Iran would benefit no one,” he warned, urging diplomacy instead.

Gaza Peace Efforts

Erdogan described the Gaza war as a “test of humanity’s conscience,” calling for a permanent ceasefire, continued humanitarian aid, and progress toward a two-state solution. He confirmed that Türkiye will take part in upcoming peace talks, with Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan representing Ankara.
