At least four people were killed and several others injured after a building collapsed during a demolition in Nairobi, Kenya. The incident happened in the Shauri Moyo area when a structure being taken down suddenly gave way.
Authorities say the building was part of the Nairobi River Regeneration Project, a government effort to remove unsafe or illegally built structures. However, it remains unclear what went wrong during the demolition.
Rescue teams, including the military, are continuing efforts to search for anyone trapped under the rubble, while some victims have already been pulled out and taken for medical care. Officials confirmed that at least two people were rescued alive.
The tragedy highlights a wider issue in Nairobi, where building collapses are relatively common due to poor construction practices and failure to follow safety regulations. Past investigations by the National Construction Authority found that more than half of the city’s buildings were not safe for occupation.
Authorities are expected to investigate the incident to determine responsibility and prevent similar accidents in the future.
