The Guinean leader had not appeared in public since February 13, when he left to attend the African Union summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. His unexpected absence sparked rumors in Guinea about where he was and whether he was in good health.
Doumbouya landed on Friday at Ahmed Sékou Touré International Airport, where he was welcomed by his wife Lauriane Doumbouya, Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah, military officials, and thousands of supporters who gathered along the streets waving national flags and cheering.
Authorities had earlier said the president was simply taking a short break for routine medical checks and rest, though they did not initially reveal his location.
In a statement, the presidency described his return as the end of an important diplomatic period for the country and said Guinea was strengthening its presence on the global stage.
Doumbouya first came to power in 2021 after leading a military coup that removed former president Alpha Condé, who had governed the country since 2010. The military leader later transitioned into civilian politics and won the presidential election in December with more than 86% of the vote, securing a five-year term.
He has promised to use Guinea’s rich natural resources including bauxite, iron ore, gold, and diamonds to boost economic development and improve living conditions in the country.
