Mojtaba Khamenei has been named Iran’s new supreme leader, according to state media, succeeding his father Ali Khamenei.
The decision was announced by the Assembly of Experts, the body responsible for overseeing leadership succession in the Islamic Republic.
Mojtaba Khamenei, a cleric with strong ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, had long been viewed by some within Iran’s ruling establishment as a potential successor.
His appointment marks a significant political transition and comes despite longstanding ideological opposition within Iran’s system to hereditary-style leadership succession.
