A major crisis is unfolding in the Middle East after joint strikes by the United States and Israel reportedly killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.

Israel said its military is now striking targets in the “heart of Tehran,” claiming it is targeting Iranian missile and air defence systems. Explosions were reported near key sites in the Iranian capital, including areas close to hospitals and media buildings.

Iran confirmed Khamenei’s death and declared a 40-day mourning period. President Masoud Pezeshkian called revenge a “legitimate duty,” while security chief Ali Larijani warned that stronger retaliation is coming. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards also promised severe punishment for those responsible.

The conflict quickly spread beyond Iran. Explosions were heard in Riyadh as Iran launched retaliatory strikes across the Gulf. An oil tanker was attacked near Oman, and smoke was seen rising from a US military base in Erbil, Iraq. Air travel across the region has also been disrupted.

International reaction has been swift. The International Atomic Energy Agency announced an emergency meeting to address concerns about Iran’s nuclear facilities. China called for an immediate ceasefire and urged dialogue.

Protests erupted in several countries, including demonstrations in Kashmir and outside the US consulate in Karachi. Anti-war protests were also reported in American cities.

US President Donald Trump warned Iran not to escalate further, saying any new attack would be met with force “never seen before.”

With senior Iranian military leaders also reportedly killed and both sides exchanging threats, the situation has pushed the region into one of its most dangerous moments in years, raising fears of a wider war.
