Retselisitsoe Matlanyane, Finance Minister of Lesotho, has denied claims that artificial intelligence (AI) was used to write part of her recent budget speech.
The controversy began after a paragraph — reportedly labeled as paragraph 108 — was said to appear AI-generated. However, Matlanyane stated that the paragraph did not exist in the official document she delivered in parliament.
She explained that the concern was first raised by her own staff during the parliamentary session. After reviewing her copy, she insisted the “strange” wording was not there. The claims later spread on social media.
Despite rejecting the accusation, the minister said AI should not be feared. Instead, she described it as a permanent feature of modern life that should be used responsibly to support national development.
Matlanyane encouraged both public and private sectors to work together to use AI to improve efficiency, transparency and accountability, stressing that it should complement human thinking — not replace it.
