Madagascar is set to screen candidates for its new cabinet using lie detector tests, according to interim president Michael Randrianirina
The leader said the government will use polygraph testing as part of background integrity checks before finalising appointments, with the new cabinet expected to be announced early next week
Randrianirina explained that the tests are intended to identify corruption risks and ensure that those selected are committed to the country’s reform agenda
The move follows the dismissal of the previous government and comes after months of unrest that led to the departure of former president Andry Rajoelina
The interim president, who came to power after his military unit backed protesters, has pledged to organise elections by 2027
He also confirmed that only candidates who pass the polygraph will be considered alongside newly appointed prime minister Mamitiana Rajaonarison
In a controversial remark, Randrianirina said the government is not seeking “perfect” candidates but those who are “at least 60 percent clean,” arguing that such a standard would still allow the country to move forward
