International labs to determine if late Nigerian singer is father of his son
A court in Lagos, Nigeria has approved international DNA tests to determine whether late Afrobeats star Mohbad was the biological father of a young boy named Liam.
The case was filed by Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, who asked the court in 2025 to confirm the paternity of the child born to the singer’s widow, Omowunmi Aloba. The ruling allows three laboratories — one in the United States and two in the United Kingdom — to conduct the tests.
Magistrate Adefisoye Sonuga approved the decision after both sides agreed that a DNA test was necessary to settle the dispute. According to reports, both Mohbad’s father and his widow chose one laboratory each, while the court selected a third independent facility. The three results must match for the conclusion to be accepted.
Samples are expected to be collected in April with all parties present.
The child, Liam, was born just a few months before Mohbad’s death in September 2023 at the age of 27. The singer, whose real name was Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, was known for hit songs like “Feel Good” and “KPK.”
The paternity dispute has delayed Mohbad’s burial for more than two years. The disagreement is also believed to be connected to questions about the inheritance of the singer’s estate.
Meanwhile, controversy continues around Mohbad’s death. Music promoter Naira Marley and associate Sam Larry were cleared of involvement last year, but prosecutors in Lagos are still pursuing charges against a nurse and a friend of the singer over alleged negligence during his medical treatment.
