More than 17,500 American citizens have returned to the United States from the Middle East since late February, as tensions intensified following U.S.–Israeli strikes on Iran.

According to the U.S. State Department, over 8,500 Americans returned on Tuesday alone, while thousands of others have traveled onward to Europe and Asia or remain in transit.

Assistant Secretary Dylan Johnson said a 24-hour State Department task force has been coordinating assistance for U.S. nationals across the region, providing security updates, logistical support and travel guidance.

The surge in departures comes after large-scale military strikes targeting Iranian leadership triggered retaliatory drone and missile attacks by Tehran against Israeli and U.S.-linked sites in the Gulf.

Officials say evacuation assistance will continue as the situation in the region remains volatile.
