The European Commission has proposed that goods and components from Türkiye could be considered “Made in EU” under a new industrial policy plan. This would allow Turkish products to qualify for certain public subsidies and auctions aimed at strengthening Europe’s industrial sector.

The proposal is part of the Industrial Accelerator Act, which encourages the use of products manufactured within Europe in government-supported projects. The EU says the initiative is designed to boost local manufacturing and respond to strong global competition, especially from producers in China.

Because the EU and Türkiye are already connected through a customs union, the plan would help maintain strong trade ties and existing supply chains between them. Industries such as clean technology, cement, steel, aluminium, and automotive components could benefit from the policy.

However, Turkish companies still cannot directly bid for public procurement contracts inside the EU, such as building schools or hospitals in countries like France. Even so, EU companies that win these contracts can still use Turkish-made materials or parts, and those products would count as “Made in EU.”

The proposal highlights Türkiye’s important role in Europe’s supply chains, particularly in the automotive industry, and signals the EU’s intention to keep close economic ties with the country.
