Suspected terrorists launched a late-night attack on a military post near Maiduguri, a major city in northeastern Nigeria. The assault happened around midnight in the Ajilari Cross area, only a few kilometres from the city’s airport.
Authorities believe the attackers were linked to Boko Haram. Residents reported hearing sporadic gunshots and explosions during the attack, which caused panic in the neighbourhood.
According to police spokesperson Nahum Kenneth Daso, security forces were already on high alert and quickly responded to the situation. Soldiers and other security personnel successfully repelled the attackers, forcing them to retreat.
Officials said no civilians or soldiers were killed, although some of the attackers were believed to have died. Local residents reported seeing four bodies of suspected militants after the clash.
A second attempted attack was also reported in Damboa, south of Maiduguri, but security forces again pushed back the militants.
Emergency officials confirmed that the situation was under control by Monday morning, and the area had returned to calm.
Maiduguri, once a major centre of insurgent activity, has been relatively peaceful in recent years. The last major attack in the city happened in 2021, when militants fired mortars that killed several people.
