A drone strike on a power plant plunged Sudan’s key city of El-Obeid into darkness on Tuesday. The attack was carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) amid their ongoing fight against the army in Kordofan, one of the country’s war hotspots since April 2023.

Residents reported explosions and flames early in the morning, with electricity still out hours later. El-Obeid sits on a strategic crossroads linking RSF-held Darfur to army-controlled regions, making it a key target in the conflict.

The war has already killed tens of thousands and displaced around 11 million people, sparking the world’s largest hunger and displacement crisis. Recent army counter-offensives have relieved sieges on other Kordofan cities, but the fighting in El-Obeid continues to put civilians at risk.
