Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has publicly thanked Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev for removing the transit blockade on goods destined for Armenia, a decision that has enabled the resumption of direct trade between the two countries after decades.

According to Armenpress, Pashinyan made the remarks during a session of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council, the highest governing body of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), held at the Boris Yeltsin Presidential Library in St. Petersburg, Russia.

In his address, Pashinyan said that ongoing “positive and constructive changes” in the South Caucasus are creating new opportunities not only for the immediate region but also for neighboring states, while contributing to broader economic stability. He emphasized the importance of enhancing cooperation in transportation and logistics as a key driver of regional integration.

The Armenian prime minister highlighted a recent shipment between Armenia and Azerbaijan, describing it as the first instance of bilateral trade between the two countries in several decades. He characterized the development as one of the earliest tangible achievements in efforts to establish lasting peace and stability in the region.

Pashinyan specifically noted that the removal of the transit blockade through Azerbaijani territory made this trade possible, creating the necessary conditions for the launch of bilateral economic activity. He expressed his appreciation to President Aliyev for facilitating the process and enabling progress toward normalization.

As part of this breakthrough, a train carrying approximately 1,200 tons of fuel of Azerbaijani origin arrived in Armenia on Dec. 19 via Georgia. The shipment marked a symbolic and practical step forward in regional connectivity, underscoring the potential for expanded economic cooperation following years of strained relations.

Observers see the development as a confidence-building measure that could support ongoing diplomatic efforts and foster a more stable and interconnected South Caucasus.
