Vladimir Putin, president of Russia, cautioned on Thursday that communication methods on the front lines not controlled by Russian authorities could endanger military personnel. Speaking in Moscow during a meeting with military women ahead of International Women’s Day, Putin emphasized the importance of using secure, state-controlled channels.
Putin discussed communication systems with female signal operator Irina Godunova, who confirmed that Telegram had been used at the front but called it an “enemy means of communication.” She suggested the need for improved, homegrown systems. Putin also referenced the disconnection of Starlink for Russian users, warning that opponents continue to use such foreign systems while Russian troops are cut off.
Russian authorities have been restricting access to apps and social media platforms since 2019, including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, and WhatsApp. Telegram was temporarily limited in early February but restrictions were lifted following complaints from the military.
