FIFA president Gianni Infantino has suggested that players who cover their mouths while speaking to opponents could face red cards especially if racist language is involved.
The discussion gained attention after Vinícius Júnior of Real Madrid accused Gianluca Prestianni of Benfica of racially insulting him during a Champions League match. Prestianni, who denies the claim, had spoken to Vinícius while covering his mouth with his jersey during Madrid’s 1–0 first-leg win. He was later provisionally suspended pending an investigation.
The issue was formally discussed at a meeting of the International Football Association Board (IFAB), the body responsible for football’s rules. Any new measure could potentially be introduced as early as this summer’s World Cup.
Infantino said that if a player covers his mouth and makes racist remarks, he should be sent off immediately. He argued that hiding one’s mouth suggests there is something inappropriate being said.
FIFA has repeatedly stated that it wants stronger actions in the fight against racism in football, and this proposal could become part of that broader effort.
