Rescue teams in South Africa are urgently working to reach five miners trapped 800 metres underground at the Ekapa Mine in Kimberley, after communication with them was suddenly lost.

The miners have been cut off since Tuesday, when a mud rush flooded part of the mine shaft, blocking access and making rescue efforts extremely difficult. Emergency crews have been pumping water nonstop, but the path to the workers remains sealed.

With no contact from the trapped men, concern is growing as the hours stretch into days.

Mine management says operations are still underway, though dangerous underground conditions are slowing progress. Local authorities, including the Sol Plaatje Municipality, confirmed that emergency services are on high alert and ready to provide additional support.

The Minerals Council South Africa has also sent a specialised rescue team to strengthen efforts and help support the miners’ families, who are waiting anxiously for updates.

The incident has brought back memories of past major rescue missions in the country, including the widely watched Stilfontein mine operation.
