Senegal Demands Investigation After AFCON Title Reversal

Government rejects CAF decision and vows legal action

Senegal has called for an independent international investigation into suspected corruption after the Confederation of African Football stripped the country of its Africa Cup of Nations title and awarded it to Morocco

The controversy stems from the final held in Rabat on January 18, when Senegalese players briefly walked off the pitch in protest over a late penalty decision given to the host nation

After being persuaded to return by captain Sadio Mane, Morocco missed the penalty, and Pape Gueye later scored in extra time to secure what was initially a 1-0 victory for Senegal

However, CAF reversed the result, ruling that Senegal forfeited the match due to players leaving the field, and officially recorded a 3-0 win for Morocco

Senegal’s government strongly criticized the decision, saying it “seriously undermines” CAF’s credibility and describing it as unjust and illegal. Authorities have pledged to pursue legal action, including appealing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport

The Senegalese Football Federation also condemned the ruling, calling it unprecedented and damaging to the reputation of African football
