Seychelles has reaffirmed its support for Mauritius in its effort to regain full sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago, according to an official statement released after talks between the two nations’ leaders.

Seychelles President Patrick Herminie expressed solidarity with Mauritius during a meeting with Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam. Herminie also welcomed assurances from Mauritius that Seychellois Chagossians would receive equal treatment in compensation benefits related to the islands.

The discussions took place during celebrations marking Mauritius’ 58th Independence Day from British colonial rule. The announcement comes shortly after Seychelles suspended diplomatic ties with Maldives over its refusal to recognize Mauritian sovereignty over the islands.

Both countries also agreed to strengthen diplomatic relations by establishing resident diplomatic missions in each other’s capitals.

In addition, the leaders signed a joint declaration supporting the sustainable development of the shared continental shelf area in the Mascarene Plateau, calling it an example of responsible ocean governance. Seven agreements were also signed to boost cooperation in areas such as culture, agriculture, fisheries, training, and capacity building.
