Somalia’s National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has launched campaign activities for local council elections in four federal member states, marking a key step as the country prepares for a future presidential vote.
The commission confirmed preparations are complete in South West, Hirshabelle, Galmudug, and North East states following technical assessments. Chairperson Abdikarim Ahmed Hasan said voter card printing has begun, signalling the final logistical phase before polling.
Somalia has not held a direct national election since 1969, when Siad Barre took power in a coup. Since the collapse of his regime in 1991, presidents have been chosen indirectly through a clan-based parliamentary system.
The move follows December’s landmark local elections in Banaadir, which includes Mogadishu — the first such vote there in 57 years.
Officials say the process represents a major milestone in Somalia’s long journey back to universal suffrage.
