Somalia is preparing to begin issuing the East African Community (EAC) passport to its citizens, joining other member countries that already use this shared regional travel document.
Somalia’s ambassador to Tanzania officially handed over the approved passport design to Somalia’s Interior Minister and immigration officials. This marks an important diplomatic milestone and is expected to make travel easier for Somalis across East Africa.
Somalia received authorisation to print the EAC passport in December 2025. The EAC e-Passport, first launched in 2016, is recognised internationally and comes in three types: Diplomatic, Service, and Ordinary.
Somalia officially became the eighth member of the EAC in March 2024 and has already appointed representatives to the East African Legislative Assembly.
