Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa has expressed condolences to US President Donald Trump following a deadly ISIS attack in central Syria that left three Americans dead, underscoring Damascus’ pledge to safeguard security and stability across the country.
According to a statement released by the Syrian presidency, Sharaa sent a formal message to Trump after the attack, which occurred on Saturday in the desert area near the ancient city of Palmyra in Homs province. The Syrian leader strongly condemned the assault and conveyed solidarity with the families of the victims.
Sharaa reaffirmed that Syria remains committed to maintaining public safety and preventing terrorist groups from undermining stability, not only within its borders but across the wider region. The statement emphasized that acts of terrorism would not derail efforts to restore order following years of conflict.
In response to the attack, Syrian security forces launched an operation targeting ISIS cells in the Homs countryside. Authorities announced the arrest of five suspects believed to be linked to the group.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that two American service members and one civilian were killed, while three additional troops were injured in what it described as an ambush carried out by an ISIS gunman.
US forces have been operating in Syria as part of the international coalition against ISIS since 2014. Syria formally joined the coalition in November 2025, marking a shift in coordination following the collapse of the previous Bashar al-Assad administration in late 2024.
Since taking office, President al-Sharaa’s government has prioritized restoring internal security and reestablishing state authority, positioning counterterrorism efforts as a central pillar of Syria’s post-conflict recovery.
