Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police, following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun.

The announcement, delivered by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, cited “pressing family considerations” for Egbetokun’s departure. Tinubu said the decision was made in accordance with existing laws and in response to mounting national security challenges.

Disu assumes leadership at a particularly volatile moment. Nigeria is grappling with a multi-front crisis — including insurgency in the northeast led by extremist groups such as Boko Haram and Daesh, widespread banditry and kidnappings in the northwest, and growing urban insecurity fueled by economic hardship and unemployment.

Under Nigerian law, the President is expected to convene the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s substantive appointment before forwarding his nomination to the Senate for confirmation.
