Donald Trump has warned that NATO could face a “very bad” future if US allies do not help reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz, which has been effectively shut by Iran amid escalating regional tensions.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Trump said that just as the United States supported Ukraine during the war with Russia, European countries should help ensure the security of the vital shipping route used for global oil transport.
Trump said he expects NATO members and other beneficiaries of the strait to contribute resources such as minesweepers and forces capable of addressing threats along the Iranian coast.
He also revealed that Washington is currently in talks with seven countries about securing the waterway but expressed doubts that Iran is ready for serious negotiations to end the conflict.
The uncertainty surrounding the conflict has shaken global energy markets. Oil prices have surged as fears grow about potential supply disruptions if the strait remains closed.
On Sunday, US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude rose about 2.5% to around $100 per barrel, while international benchmark Brent Crude climbed nearly 3% to above $106 per barrel.
