Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has presented the Atatürk International Peace Award to UN Secretary-General António Guterres during an official ceremony in Ankara, praising his efforts to promote global peace and multilateral cooperation.
In his remarks, Erdoğan commended the UN chief’s role in supporting dialogue and international stability, while reaffirming Türkiye’s commitment to strengthening the United Nations and its global role. He stressed that justice remains essential for achieving sustainable peace and development.
The Turkish leader also reiterated Ankara’s support for reforms aimed at making the UN more inclusive and representative, arguing that the organisation must better reflect today’s global realities.
Erdoğan further highlighted Türkiye’s diplomatic initiatives to prevent the escalation of tensions in the Middle East, warning that rising confrontation around Iran could trigger a wider regional crisis. He emphasized that Ankara will continue pursuing active diplomacy to encourage dialogue and prevent further conflict, despite ongoing challenges in negotiations involving the United States, Israel and Iran.
