The United Nations Security Council has imposed sanctions on four senior commanders of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) over atrocities committed during the October takeover of Al Fasher, the capital of North Darfur.
The sanctioned individuals include RSF deputy commanders Abdelrahim Hamdan Daglo and Gedo Hamdan Ahmed, Brigadier General Al-Fateh Abdullah Idris, and field commander Tijani Ibrahim. The move follows a UN fact-finding mission that determined acts of genocide were carried out during the RSF’s 18-month siege and final assault on the city.
According to the UN, the offensive was marked by summary executions, systematic sexual violence, and mass detentions, primarily targeting members of the ethnic Zaghawa community. Abdelrahim Daglo, brother of RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, reportedly appeared in footage ordering fighters to kill rather than take captives.
Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a brutal conflict between the RSF and the national army — a war the UN describes as one of widespread atrocities that has triggered the world’s largest hunger and displacement crisis.
