Tulsi Gabbard has stated that the United States and Israel are not aligned in their core objectives in the ongoing war with Iran
Speaking before a congressional hearing she explained that Israel has primarily focused on targeting Iran’s leadership through assassinations while Donald Trump has prioritised dismantling Iran’s ballistic missile capabilities and naval forces
Despite public messaging emphasising coordination between the two allies officials have acknowledged differences in strategy as the conflict approaches its third week
Israeli operations have concentrated on high level figures including military leaders and clerics whereas US strikes have largely targeted infrastructure linked to missile development and production
The divide became more visible after Trump said Washington had no prior knowledge of an Israeli strike on Iran’s South Pars gas field an attack that triggered retaliatory action affecting regional energy infrastructure
During the hearing Gabbard did not provide a clear explanation for Israel’s decision to strike such facilities despite US preferences to avoid targeting energy sites
She also faced questions from lawmakers including Joaquin Castro about whether Iran posed an imminent threat to the United States at the time the conflict began
Gabbard maintained that determining the level of threat ultimately falls under the authority of the president
The issue has sparked debate within US security circles following the resignation of Joe Kent who argued that Iran did not present an immediate threat
