Zambian authorities have reported two deaths and 17 new cholera cases within the last 24 hours, prompting renewed calls for public vigilance to prevent the spread of the disease.

According to the Zambia National Public Health Institute (ZNPHI), 14 of the new cases were recorded in the capital Lusaka, while three others were identified in Mpulungu district, located along the shores of Lake Tanganyika in northern Zambia.

Health officials confirmed that both fatalities occurred in the Kanyama area of Lusaka, one of the communities affected by the outbreak.

Speaking on state television, Doreen Shempela, Director of Public Health Policy, Diplomacy and Communication at ZNPHI, said authorities are working closely with partners to strengthen laboratory capacity, disease surveillance and treatment efforts.

Officials warned that cholera outbreaks often intensify during the rainy season, urging citizens to adopt preventive measures to reduce the risk of infection.
