At least 33 people have been killed after Islamic militants launched coordinated attacks on a community in northwest Nigeria.

The assault happened Wednesday in Biu community in Kebbi state. Police spokesman Bashir Usman said the attackers crossed over from neighboring Sokoto state, where parts of the region are known to be occupied by the Lakurawa insurgent group.

According to police, the armed militants entered the area to rustle cattle, a common tactic used by the Lakurawa group. Security forces have since been deployed to restore calm and maintain order.

The Lakurawa group operates mainly in Sokoto state and surrounding areas, carrying out cattle theft, village raids, and kidnappings for ransom.

Northern Nigeria continues to face a complicated security crisis involving both extremist militants and armed criminal gangs. The violence has left many communities vulnerable and displaced thousands of residents.

In response to growing insecurity, Nigeria has strengthened security cooperation with the United States. Earlier this week, the Nigerian military confirmed that 100 U.S. troops arrived in the country to help train local forces in their fight against armed groups.
